Alternative Design Consistency Rating Methods for Two-Lane Rural Highways

چکیده

Design consistency refers to the conformance of a highway's geometry with driver expectancy. Drivers make fewer errors in the vicinity of geometric features that conform with their expectations. Techniques to evaluate the consistency of a design documented within this report include alignment indices, speed distribution measures, and driver workload. Alignment indices are quantitative measures of the general character of a roadway segment's alignment. Potential indicators of geometric inconsistency include a large increase in the magnitude of the alignment indices for a successive roadway segment or feature or a high rate of change occuring over some length of road. Speed distribution measures—including variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and coefficient of skewness—were investigated as potential candidates for a consistency rating method. The results indicated that speed variance is inappropriate as a design consistency measure for horizontal curvature. Driver workload is a measure of the information processing demands imposed by roadway geometry on a driver. The efforts for this study used both objective and subjective measures to model geometric features and combinations of features in terms of the difficulty that they pose to drivers. Vision occlusion, subjective difficulty ratings, a driving simulator, and an eye-mark system were used during the research.

Modeling the Operational Speed of Tangents and Curves in Four-lane Highways Based on Geometric and Roadside Factors

Operational speed is an index that represents drivers’ speeding behaviors and shows the comfort and safety levels they experience. Many models had been proposed to predict operational speed in tangent and curve segments of highways. Most of these works had used geometric, with few of them conducted using roadside variables to predict operational speed. Also, the operational speed study in multi...

New geometric design consistency model based on operating speed profiles for road safety evaluation.

To assist in the on-going effort to reduce road fatalities as much as possible, this paper presents a new methodology to evaluate road safety in both the design and redesign stages of two-lane rural highways. This methodology is based on the analysis of road geometric design consistency, a value which will be a surrogate measure of the safety level of the two-lane rural road segment. The consis...

Theoretical and Empirical Relationships for the Quality of Flow and for a New Level of Service on Two-Lane Highways

This study has three main objectives: 1 to develop new, theory-based, queuing relationships for the quality of flow on two-lane rural highways; 2 to estimate the relationships both from the empirical data that were collected on 15 two-lane rural highways and from the queuing models that were developed; and 3 to propose a new level-of-service variable that measures the quality of the flow both i...

Potential crash reduction benefits of shoulder rumble strips in two-lane rural highways.

This paper reports the findings from a study aimed at examining the effectiveness of shoulder rumble strips in reducing run-off-the-road (ROR) crashes on two-lane rural highways using the empirical Bayes (EB) before-and-after analysis method. Specifically, the study analyzed the effects of traffic volume, roadway geometry and paved right shoulder width on the effectiveness of shoulder rumble st...
